The first Canadian Citizenship Act became law on January 1, 1947, marking the beginning of Canadian citizenship as a legal status. Many Canadians are citizens because they were born in Canada. Others are citizens because one of their parents is a Canadian citizen. Those who were formerly foreign nationals but after having acquired Canadian permanent resident status, elected to take Canadian citizenship through a process called naturalization by making an application for a grant of citizenship.
The process by which a foreign national, after being admitted to Canada as a permanent resident, applies for and obtains Canadian citizenship.
